Bedroom Lighting Commission

Bedroom Lighting Commission

When I met Jane and Julian back in 2024, we immediately all got on like a house on fire. They came into the shop several times and chatted before deciding that they wanted to commission me to make them two extra large lamps to go on either side of their bed.

They showed me some photos of their bedroom and we decided that the colour(s) of the lamp needed to compliment the Susan Diamond painting that hung above their bed.

They'd seen a lamp in the shop that they really liked - it was impressed with grasses and they decided that they wanted something similar but in a larger size. Julian decided he wanted a few honesty seeds on his lamp - so he could claim that it was his!

Initially I made the two lamps and fired them - this is when they are at their most fragile stage. In the photo (above) you can see the beginning of the glazing process. The lamp in the middle was the one that had inspired their choice of textures and style of glazing.

Once I'd finished glazing the lamps, they were fired again to 1260 degrees centigrade. I then wired them up and Jane & Julian were able to choose exactly how long they wanted the cable to be (no trip hazzards around the bed please). They were also able to choose to have a plug in dimmer switch - which allows them to be able to alter the amount of light coming through the lamp.

The funny thing, for me, about this story is that Susan Diamond worked from our shop just before we were there. If someone told me in 2015 that one day our work would be sitting next to each other harmoniously in someone's home I would have been surprised. Now I am delighted. 😀
